Unexpected medical costs can add up quickly without the right insurance coverage. When Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn’t cut it, explore the options of a Medicare Advantage plan. A Medicare Advantage Plan, also known as a Medicare Part C, is a type of health insurance offered by private insurance carriers approved by Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans must cover all the benefits of Original Medicare Parts A and Part B, and most include prescription drug coverage (Part D). Most Medicare Advantage plans offer additional benefits not typically covered by Original Medicare, such as vision, dental and hearing.

What is a Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)?

Medicare Part C plans, also called “Medicare Advantage Plans” or “MA Plans”, are an alternative to Original Medicare and Medicare Part D. MA Plans are offered by private Medicare-approved companies. Besides hospice care, they cover everything Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) covers and more.

MAPD Coverage

Get more coverage under a Medicare Advantage plan. In addition to hospital and medical insurance from Part A and Part B, a MA plan could also cover:

  • Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D)
  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Dental
  • Wellness programs
  • Emergency care
  • Non-life-threatening urgent care

These plans are often offered at no premium or a minimal premium. Part C plans also provide a protective annual out-of-pocket cost maximum, which limits how much you pay for medical services each year. Health provider options under Medicare Advantage plans are limited to reliable plan networks.

Medicare Advantage Eligibility

Most MAPD plans are year to year and you may be eligible to make a change depending on your particular circumstances. Medicare Advantage plan benefits change year to year. The annual enrollment Period (AEP) is October 15 through December 7 th . This will allow you to make a plan change or return to Original Medicare.
